Iowa marching band pays tribute to member who collapsed and died during season opener

DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC/Gray News) - The Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band member who collapsed at the home opener football game and died was honored at the Cy-Hawk game on Saturday.Derek Phillips, a mellophone player in the Hawkeye Marching Band, collapsed in the heat at the Hawkeyes football game one week ago and went into cardiac arrest. His family announced on Monday they were taking Phillips off life support. The Hawkeye Marching Band shared the news of Phillips’ death Tuesday.On Saturday at the Cy-Hawk game, the entire stadium took a moment of silence before the National Anthem to honor Derek Phillips.Marching band members wore black ribbons on their uniforms.The halftime show “50 Years of The Muppet Show” had a new formation at the end to spell “Derek” on the field.The Iowa State University Cyclone Marching Band will honor Phillips by sporting a black and gold pin with the outline of the state of Iowa and the letters “DIFD.” They will wear them for the remainder of the season.The Norther
